- The PipeDream Window
-
- This is a simple PipeDream 4 document. The window looks and is
- different from its PipeDream 3 equivalent. The official names for the
- different parts of the window are given below.
-
- At the top of this PipeDream document is its full path name,
- adfs::4Intro.$.Documents.ReadMe. This complies with Acorn's
- recommendations for RISC OS windows.
-
- Below the file name, from left to right, are the PipeDream 4 logo, the
- formula button (which looks like an italic f), the cross icon, the tick
- icon and the formula line. A formula is the PipeDream 4 word for what
- was, in PipeDream 3, called an expression.
-
- Below that row, on the left you will find the mark block box followed
- by the column headings. This file has only one column, column A.
-
-
- Transparent and Opaque Columns
-
- Load the file from the Template01 directory called [Template01.AtoF].
- To do this you must 'open' the Templates directory by double clicking
- the mouse select (left) button on Template and then double clicking on
- the file [AtoF] to open it. You will find the caret is at the left end
- of the slot A1. In PipeDream 4 the condition of a file when it is
- loaded is exactly the same as the condition in which it was saved.
- This includes such things as where the window is on screen as well as
- where the caret is within the PipeDream 4 window. This is different
- and I believe better than PipeDream 3.
-
- Type a few words into the slot A1 such as "The cat sat on the mat".
- Type at least 13 characters and then tap the <Tab> key. You will see
- that the caret jumps to the beginning of slot B1. Unlike PipeDream 3
- there is no B1 shown in the formula line nor elsewhere so you have to
- rely on the dark blue colouring of the row 1 and column B borders.
-
- Because the caret is 'in' cell B1 row 1 of the 'B' column becomes
- opaque (as PipeDream 3) and overlays the words written into the 'A'
- column. The text in the 'A' column has not disappeared but is hidden.
- You can move the caret back into column 'A' by holding down <Shift> and
- tapping <Tab>, this will be denoted by <Shift Tab>, and column 'B'
- becomes transparent again. It is helpful to regard the document [AtoF]
- as six sheets of paper, all with the same right margin but with their
- left margins at the left end of each of the columns.
-
- Only if there is text in, say, row 6 of column B does B6 become opaque.
- Prove this to yourself by typing a few words into slot B1 such as "The
- mouse ran up the clock" and then moving the caret back to A1.
-
- If there is text in B6 but not in B5 then B6 is opaque but B5 is not.
- Practice until you are confident that you know what happens.
-
-
- Menus
-
- Move the pointer over the PipeDream 4 icon which is on the icon bar and
- tap the mouse menu (middle) button. You will see that the menu is
- different from the PipeDream 3 menu; some of the menu items such as
- Colours and Paste depth which were found in PipeDream document window
- menus in PipeDream 3 are now in this menu. I am not sure but I believe
- that choices saved from the icon menu are saved in your PipeDream but
- choices saved from the window menus are all saved with the document.
-
- For example, from the window menus you can save your PipeDream printer
- driver setup. This is saved with the file in PipeDream 4 but not when
- you save in PipeDream 3. I have yet to discover whether it is true but
- I believe that all the Options available through <Ctrl O> are saved
- with the file. When people send me PipeDream 3 files I sometimes need
- their [ini] file in order to recreate their problem because their
- options are saved in an [ini] (initialisation) file and not with the
- document.
-
- I keep forgetting as I write these files for you is that the caret
- position is also saved with the document. What I have tried to do for
- you is to position the caret in slot A1 before saving the file for the
- last time. If you do not find the caret in A1 then I have forgotten.
-
-
- Template Files
-
- Gone are [ini] files but included are Template files. Template files
- are saved with <Ctrl FI> and are stored in a sub directory of the
- !PipeDream directory unsurprisingly called [Templates]. As an example,
- you can create a blank letter complete with letter heading, 'todays
- date' and lookup() functions (which interrogate an address file) and
- then save it as a template file. All this information (including the
- text of the blank letter) is saved in the template. You will find that
- I have created such a system of files in the BusLetter directory.
-
- Template files can be reloaded from the PipeDream icon menu using the
- New document option. However, they can be deleted only by opening the
- !PipeDream.Template directory and using the adfs filing system Delete
- command (with the mouse).
-
-
- Commands
-
- As in PipeDream 3 there are three ways of executing commands.
-
- The first way is through the menus. I suggest that you use the menus
- until you become more familiar with the commands. I believe that
- (nearly) all the PipeDream 3 commands are supported even if they are
- not documented in the Pipedream 4 reference guide. Unlike PipeDream 3
- you can decide what you want on your short menus by adding or deleting
- commands from the PipeDream icon (or with the new <Ctrl FGM> sequence).
-
- The second way is by holding down the <Ctrl> key and tapping out a
- sequence. I have included in the directory Commands all those listed
- in the reference manual. There are more commands in PipeDream 4 than
- there were in PipeDream 3 and many of the commands which did not have a
- <Ctrl> sequence, such as font selection, now have a <Ctrl> sequence.
- By the way, the command for font selection is <Ctrl PFG>, a sequence
- that did not exist in PipeDream 3.
-
- The third way is, as in PipeDream 3, through the function keys.
- However, beware, only F1 to F11 have been allocated and not the <Shift>
- or <Ctrl> function key combinations so, unless you put them back
- deliberately, they are not there. Some of the function keys now
- perform different functions. The PipeDream 4 list is:
-
- F1 Help
- F2 Edit formula (note that the word expression is not used)
- F3 Save document (as Impression and many other applications)
- F4 Search
- F5 Repeat command (a new one)
- F6 Next match (during searching)
- F7 Insert row (unchanged from PipeDream 3)
- F8 Delete row (unchanged from PipeDream 3)
- F9 Paste (pastes back anything deleted except single letters)
- F10 Delete word
- F11 Delete to end of slot
-
- A new key strip is supplied with PipeDream 4 but not with the
- PipeDream 4 demonstration disc. I have now got used to this new
- function key layout and, whilst I miss some of my favourites such as
- First column, I find that, overall, I prefer the new layout to the old.
- By the way, First column is now <Shift Ctrl Tab>; Last column is just
- <Ctrl Tab>.
-
-
- The 'Mark block' Box
-
- The whole document can be marked by clicking in the mark block box (at
- the top of the PipeDream window under the PipeDream 4 logo). If there
- is a marked block then clicking on the mark block box will clear the
- marking. Generally it is good practice to clear the marking as soon as
- you need it no more. With PipeDream 3 if the marked block is off
- screen then it is sometimes difficult to realise why a command (such as
- search the whole document) is having an unexpected result (such as only
- searching the marked block). The mark block box is an easy way of
- checking if there is a marked block.
-
-
- Formulae
-
- Formulae can be typed into the formula line or, if you have a long
- formula, then by clicking the mouse select (left) button on the
- PipeDream 4 logo you will open a larger version of the formula line
- called the formula window.
-
- The tick box will enter the formula into the slot; the cross box
- escapes leaving the content of the slot unchanged.
